  • Building Bridges with Community Partners

When a family is dealing with a crisis situation or struggling to get the bills paid, those hardships have an impact on kids’ learning. For this reason, one of the goals of the Family-School Partnership Initiative is to better equip BVSD staff with the information necessary to connect families with free or low-cost community services that will support them in times of need.

On October 12, BVSD hosted its first community services information event for BVSD staff, a joint effort between BVSD Family-School Partnerships, Early Childhood Education, Special Education and McKinney-Vento services. Our goal with the event was twofold: 1)… Read More

  • MTSS: Connecting our Systems for Student Success

BVSD has adopted the CDE definition of Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS): a prevention based framework of team‐driven, data‐based problem solving for improving the outcomes of every student through family, school, and community partnering and a layered continuum of evidence‐based practices applied at the classroom, school, district, region, and state level.

Key to understanding and implementing MTSS is realizing that it is a framework, not a program. A framework is the basic structure underlying a system. In 2016-17, school-based MTSS Leadership Teams will be planning how to implement the district adopted framework for MTSS at their buildings during the… Read More

  • The 2016 BVSD Recruiting Season

One of the Key Actions of the Educator Pipeline committee is to attract and recruit qualified teacher candidates both locally and nationally.  Finding the highest quality teachers is often accomplished through recruiting efforts at local and national job fairs. During the 2015-2016 school year, hundreds of prospective applicants were able to speak to district and school administrators about working in the Boulder Valley School District.  The purpose of job fairs is to recruit a wide range of candidates in an effort to ensure the most qualified teacher is hired from the broadest and most diverse pool of applicants.  Recruiting nationally… Read More

  • Why We Should Avoid “Random Acts of Family Partnership”

The research is clear — when families and schools actively work together to support kids, students are more successful academically, are healthier, and are more likely to thrive (Epstein et al, 2009, Jeynes, 2011, Sheldon & Jung, 2015). At the same time, families and school staff alike are often stretched for time, juggling their many work and family responsibilities. Therefore, as BVSD schools enhance their efforts to welcome, communicate, engage and partner with families, we must avoid slipping into “random acts of family partnership.” When we are strategic and purposeful in our work with families, family partnership can be one… Read More

  • Safety & Security in BVSD

The School Safety and Emergency Operations committee, which is part of the Systems of Support priority action area, is tasked with designing and implementing a comprehensive building security plan based on current best practice.  The coordinating team began its work last fall and is comprised of school-based administrators, Education Center administrators, and community partners.

The committee completed in-depth training sponsored by the Colorado School Safety Resource Center during which they learned about current best practice in school safety and security.  The team is currently soliciting input from building administrators and clerical staffs about the content and format of building-specific Emergency Operation… Read More

  • Priority Action Teams working on The Success Effect

Over 75 teachers, administrators, staff, parents and community members are developing implementation plans for the BVSD strategic plan – The Success Effect – organized into six teams, each of which has been tasked with one of the priorities for The Success Effect. The participants are developing key activities, implementation metrics and outcomes for each of the priority action areas. The action planning teams are clarifying the work that needs to be completed in order to achieve the short term outcomes, 2-3 years. Following are the six priority areas embedded in the three organizing principles of The Success Effect:
